Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

In general, VOC analysis is applicable to any organic chemical with a boiling point ranging from 35ºC to 250ºC. Measurements are reported to a quantifiable level of 2 µg/m3. Chemicals detected at lower levels are also reported for informational purposes. UL AQS measures VOCs using gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (GC/MS). Air is collected onto a multi-bed sorbent tube, which is thermally desorbed into the GC/MS. The sorbent collection, separation, and detection methodologies are detailed in ISO 16000-6, EPA TO 17, and ASTM D 6196. Once testing is complete, UL AQS reports all detected chemicals. This is important for characterizing indoor air quality and its impact on odor perception and toxicity.
