Marilyn S. Black, PhD and LEED AP

President and Founder

Marilyn Black is a global expert on indoor air quality and product emissions. She founded the GREENGUARD Certification programs for the selection of environmentally-preferred, low-emitting products and has directed several studies on indoor air pollution and its effects on human health, sustainable buildings and environments. Marilyn holds a Ph.D., a master's degree, and bachelor's degree in chemistry and environmental health. She is also a LEED Accredited Professional and sits on numerous national and international committees serving to protect human health.


Anthony G. Worthan, MPH

Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

Anthony (Tony) Worthan is an authority on emissions and human health. He holds a master's degree in Public Health in Environmental and Occupational Health, a Management Development post-graduate degree and has served on committees focused on protecting public health, including the Indoor Environmental Quality Committee and Tuberculosis Task Force of the AIHA.


Stephany Mason, PhD and LEED AP

Principal Scientist

Stephany Mason is an expert on new techniques and research methodologies related to product emissions and indoor air quality including testing for the GREENGUARD Certification programs, CHPS, Germany Blue Angel program and BIFMA methodologies, among others. Stephany holds memberships with ASTM, AWMA, ASHRAE, ACS and ISIAQ, and she has participated in developing numerous standards and regulations, including those chaired by ASTM, BIFMA, CHPS, USGBC and California 01350. 


Elliott Horner, PhD, LEED AP and FAAAAI

Principal Consultant

Dr. Elliott Horner serves as principal consultant for AQS. Broadly recognized as an expert on fungal allergens, Elliott has written numerous peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters, and he has served on committees for ASTM International, the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ), the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) and the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Elliott is a member of the American Society for Microbiology and Mycological Society of America, and he is a Fellow of the AAAAI.
