UL AQS is the premier commercial laboratory in North America to offer product testing services for the measurement of ultrafine particle (UFP) emissions. UFPs are a new class of contaminant. These particles (down to 5 nanometers in size) are of health concern because they can be inhaled deeply into the respiratory system and can even pass through protective clothing and skin. Known sources include cooking appliances, printers, and combustion sources.
UL AQS can help manufacturers stay ahead of the curve by conducting UFP emissions studies or integrating UFP measurement into existing test protocols. UFP emissions requirements have been included in the current drafts of ECMA 328 and ISO 28360. Likewise, Blue Angel RAL UZ-122 is currently developing UFP criteria to be included in certification requirements for print devices.
